Royal Divorce

After photographs taken on Mustique of Margaret and Roddy Llewellyn were leaked to the press in February 1976, lurid headlines followed about the ageing, jet-setting Princess and her toy-boy lover. Tony was able to present himself as the injured, humiliated party. Margaret told journalist Nigel Dempster some years later that, ‘Lord Snowdon was devilish cunning.’

Still on holiday in Mustique, Princess Margaret heard the news that her husband was leaving from her press secretary, Lord Nigel Napier. Not trusting the phone lines to be private, he tried to deliver the news in a slightly cryptic fashion, using Snowdon’s middle name: ‘Ma’am, I have been talking to Robert. He has given in his notice. He will be leaving by the end of the week.’

Once she finally realised what was being said, the Princess was delighted, ‘Oh, I see! Thank you, Nigel. I think that’s the best news you’ve ever given me.’
